The Mitsubishi Outlander Sport Impresses with Its Affordability

For the budget-oriented customer looking for a new subcompact crossover vehicle, it arguably gets no better than the Mitsubishi Outlander Sport. It has enough standard features to justify its price point, and the 2021 model year brings with it more safety tech. The 2021 Outlander Sport is split into ES, LE, SE, and GT trim levels.

Design

A four-door vehicle that rides on 18-inch alloy wheels, the 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport has automatic low-and-high-beam headlights, taillights, and fog lights with ultra-bright LEDs for supreme illumination ability. Heated power side mirrors flank the front doors, and the rear includes a spoiler and a wiper. Notably, the LE stands out with a black finish on the alloy wheels. Power-folding ability on the side mirrors is introduced at the SE trim level, and the GT gains black roof rails.

Performance

The base engine of the 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport is a 148-horsepower 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder engine, pinned to a continuously variable transmission for a smooth driving feel around Aurora, IL, and a peak fuel economy of 24 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway. For better acceleration, go for the GT, which is the only one with a 168-horsepower 2.5-liter I4. In addition, the GT comes with an all-wheel drivetrain to improve performance on slippery surfaces. (This drivetrain is optional on the other trim levels.)

Interior

The 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport supplies two fabric-trimmed rows of seats to accommodate up to five people. The front consists of a six-way adjustable driver's seat and a four-way adjustable front passenger seat, and the rear seats have 60/40 split-folding ability to expand cargo space if necessary.

The LE gains front-seat heating and a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and, as the Limited Edition, is the only model with a leather-wrapped parking brake lever and red contrast stitching on the steering wheel, shift knob, and parking brake lever. Only the top-level GT comes with softer seating material to enhance comfort, as well as a black headliner and pillars.

Comfort and Convenience

With remote keyless entry, the 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport enables access by pressing the key fob. Infotainment is provided with the combination of four speakers, an AM/FM radio tuner with HD Radio technology, a USB port for hooking up mobile devices, Bluetooth hands-free phone calling and audio streaming, and a 7-inch display screen.

At the LE trim level, infotainment is boosted with voice recognition control, an additional USB port, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone integration, three months of SiriusXM Radio, and an 8-inch display screen that replaces the 7-inch.

The SE gains a six-speaker setup (instead of four), as well as an upgrade of the remote keyless entry system to proximity keyless entry with push-button engine start. Only the GT has a garage-door opener next to the auto-dimming rearview mirror.

Safety Features

For restraint and cushioning when there's a crash, the 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport comes with seven airbags, consisting of a driver-side knee airbag, two frontal airbags, two side impact airbags, and two side curtain airbags. However, to help prevent crashes, the vehicle comes with a rearview camera, cruise control, forward collision mitigation with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, and automatic high beams.

Other standard safety features include LED daytime running lights to make the vehicle more conspicuous on the roads of Downers Grove. Hill-start assist is also there for a safe drive upward when shifting from braking to driving.
